Puppy Training – the essentials

Puppy training is very important not only for its behavioural benefits but for peace of mind as well. An owner with a well trained dog will be much more relaxed and happy in knowledge that his dogs behaviour is excellent. Puppies will respond much better when being trained than an older dog.

“Can’t teach an old dog new tricks” – maybe there is some truth in this old saying!

Like children, puppies are able to absorb lots of new information at a much faster rate than adult dogs.

Puppy training will give you a great opportunity to bond with your new pup.  You will both get to know each other’s characteristics and temperament.

If you think you cannot handle the huge responsibility of training your pup you could always take it to a puppy trainingprofessional dog trainer.  However, I believe that the owner should be the one to train their pup.  It is a great bonding exercise and it brings great satisfaction once you’ve succeeded.

Therefore, before you take a look at a professional dog trainer it may be beneficial to try out some of these tips.

Give us a chance, we will help you succeed!

To start off with you must keep a few basic rules in mind when puppy training:

  • You must be very patient – puppy training will take time!
  • Do not punish your dog – instead do something positive like rewarding or praising good behaviour.
  • Never, never hit your dog! – dogs need to be able to trust their owners, any physical contact could make them lose this trust.  When a dog loses its trust in its owner it will then be very difficult to get them to obey.
  • Use one word commands – this will make it easier for the puppy to learn.  You should also be consistent in the words you use.  It is also important to practice so that your puppy will not forget the commands.
