Potty Training

Fed up of accidents around the house? Try Potty Training your dog!

Getting your dog to 'go' on command is practically every dog owners dream come true. It would mean no accidents in the house, no more extra long walks in hideously cold weather and best of all, no more

embarrassment when the neighbours are round.

Like all other training procedures Potty Training can also be a lot of fun. Once again patience is a virtue and you should always
be prepared for a bit of hard work.

Your dog should already be housebroken and should spend most of his time indoors because outdoor dogs have little need for
such training.

All training requires motivation. You must already know what gets your dog in the training mood so you should continue to use
that in this training exercise as well.

Different dogs require different forms of motivation so if you are new to the training circuit you might want to try out the three
most popular motivational techniques.

1. Food - The most popular as most dogs will do almost anything for their favourite snack.
2. Fun - Some dogs will go crazy over a toy or running after a ball.
3. Praise - Just the words 'Good Boy' and a gentle pat will make your dog feel like he's won the state lottery!

Housebroken dogs will be on a schedule and this is just what you need. Keep to the schedule and take him to the 'spot' when it
is time. Once you are there choose a command word, perhaps 'potty' or 'go' or 'wee' or even 'bathroom' whatever word you pick
you must keep to it from here on.

Repeating the command is important so that your dog eventually recognises it. At first your dog will not understand what you are
saying but after a few successful attempts and some rewarding he will soon put the two together.

Remember to reward your dog when Potty Training. This will make him understand that if he pleases you he will get rewarded.

If you are using food it would be a good idea to eventually phase it out or at least cut it down to perhaps 1 in 5. Snacks can be
quite fattening and your dog will not benefit from having them all the time.

So, if you are consistent with the potty training techniques your dog will soon be able to 'go' on command! Just remember to be
patient and to reward him.
