Dog Leash Training

Dog Leash Training is a very important part of the overall training process. In fact, it is one of the most commonly used in public areas so its importance is obvious.

Many dogs do not like the feel of a collar or indeed a leash that controls their movements. However, continue reading this article and you will be successful!

The training process is very simple and an intelligent dog will only take a short while to be fully trained. Other dogs may take slightly longer but they all have the desire to please their owner and so they will succeed.

Most of you looking at this site will either have puppies or very young dogs that have not been fully trained yet. Young dogs and puppies both have one particular thing in common. They like to play.

Making leash training fun will make your dog enjoy the process much more than if it was done like it was a chore.

Leashes are primarily used outside the house when you are going for a walk with your dog. No doubt your dog loves going out so you should immediately try and associate the leash with 'walkies'. However, the first step towards successfully completing leash training is to introduce a collar to your dog.

Choose a collar according to the size and strength of your dog. Dog Leash Training

If you own a small dog like a Yorkshire Terrier you should be thinking about buying a light wieght collar that is durable. If you own a large dog like a Labrador Retriever you should be thinking about buying a collar that is heavy and very strong.

Once you have made your selection test it indoors. Let your puppy roam around the house and get used to his new collar. Many dogs will try and get rid of it straight away! Do not worry and certainly do not give in to his demands.

Your dogs collar should never be too tight. At least two fingers should fit inbetween the neck and collar.

Different dogs take different amounts of time to get used to the collar and because of this you must be patient. Patience is most certainly a virture. Once you are satisfied with your dogs progress then it is time to bring out the leash.

The leash should be attached to the collar. Keep it like that for a short while and do not let your dog out of your sight as the leash can quite easily get tangled around furniture or even its neck. This will also let your dog get used to the extra weight of the leash.Dog Leash Training

Once the initial period of frustration is over you should begin taking your dog for walks with the leash. Start off with short walks and use these as opportunities for the both of you to get used to walking together. Practically all dogs will pull and try to take you for a walk but do not get angry or upset, remain calm and just stop whenever you feel it is getting out of hand.

Some dogs may even decide that the leash does not interest them at all. This can lead to your dog not wanting anything to do with the leash. But do not worry! There are very simple ways to solve this problem.

The 'Come' command is a simple and effective way of getting your dog to move.

Using dogs commands in Leash Training is an excellent idea. Linking different training ideas and techniques with each other will help your dog through each process.  Remember to praise your dog when he follows commands and also when he completes tasks.

Dog Leash Training is loads of fun when it is done with enjoyment and care. Do not be wreckless and impatient. By making the training fun your dog will be more interested in participating and it will give you the chance to really bond with him.
